Scientific Dog Calorie Calculator

Compute your dog's daily energy requirement using the metabolic Resting Energy Requirement (RER) equation.

Understanding Daily Calories

Dogs require food to support two categories of metabolic output: basic life processes at rest and physical movement during active hours.

The **Resting Energy Requirement (RER)** is the base energy required to sustain breathing, organ function, and thermoregulation while completely at rest. Because cell volume scales metabolic processes, it is calculated using the exponential metabolic mass formula:

RER (kcal/day) = 70 * (Weight in kg)^0.75

To calculate **Maintenance Energy Requirement (MER)**, we multiply RER by an activity coefficient representing lifestyle. Sedentary or senior pets require only 1.2 times RER, regular companion dogs require 1.6 times, and high-intensity working dogs can require up to 2 to 3 times RER to prevent caloric deficiencies.

Metabolic Multipliers

Low Activity (Sedentary) RER * 1.2
Average Activity (Active Pet) RER * 1.6
Active (Sporting Dog) RER * 1.8
Very Active (Working/Athletic) RER * 2.0
Weight Reduction Diet RER * 1.0
