How Do Dogs Age?

Dogs mature rapidly during their first two years of life, reaching near-adult development in their first 12 to 18 months. As a general rule, a one-year-old dog is biologically similar to a 15-year-old teenager.

Following maturity, aging rates slow down significantly and begin to correlate directly with physical size. Smaller dog breeds experience slower metabolic rates over time, commonly living into their late teens. Conversely, large and giant dog breeds mature later but experience accelerated cellular breakdown, entering their senior years at age five or six.
